states of america. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: they wowed the crowd at the inaugural balls. president obama in white tie but first lady michelle obama in a ruby red gown by jason wu. this was the ball for the military. >> i have no greater honor than being your commander in chief. >> reporter: it had been an obama family day. malia and sasha, dad and mom. as america paid tribute. an inaugural parade that showed off the nation's talent and diversity. >> i, barack hussein obama, do solemnly swear. >> reporter: the presidential's ceremonial swearing-in witnessed by as many as 1 million people. >> congratulations, mr. obama. >> reporter: mr. obama urged cooperation, rare now in washington, to cut health care costs and the deficit. >> but we reject the belief that america must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will

buildi its future. >> reporter: we can make progress, he said, on immigration, gay rights, climate change and school safety. a night to remember for the obamas and for the nation that re-elected the president. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. president obama never used the words "democrat" or "republican" in his second inaugural address, but his political message was clear, progressive policies along with a directive for leaders that define us as individuals and as a country. >> the commitments we make to each other through medicare and medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. they do not make us a nation of takers. they free us to take the risks that make this country great. we will respond to the threat of climate change.

purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom. thank you. god bless you. and may he forever bless these united states of america. this year inauguration fell on the martin luther king jr. holiday. after being sworn in, president obama paused for a moment of reflection in front of a bust of the civil rights leader at the capitol rotunda. he was joined by the first lady and congressional leaders. but the president wasn't the only one in the spotlight on monday. first daughters malia and sasha obama had quite a few scene-stealing moments of their own. the normally reserved malia let loose a little bit, busting out dance moves for her mom before the swearing-in. and 11-year-old sasha created an instant viral video, yawning during her dad's presidential address right after a line about education policy. the girls also used their phones to take lots of photos of their family during the event. and at one point malia even

photobombed her younger sister. yeah, sisters do that to each other. before leaving the inaugural platform as the center of attention for the very last time, president obama had the presence of mind to stop and take in the moment. >> one more time. i'm not going to see this again. >> great job. ♪ meanwhile, the "today" show's al roker had this unforgettable moment with vice president joe biden while covering the inaugural parade. >> the vice president! mr. vice president! mr. vice president! hey, how you doing? come on! come on! they won't let you?

that's it! yeah! all right! yes! yes! >> the persistent al roker. now here's your look at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." we start with inauguration moments making the rounds. beau biden, the vice president's son, had a very serious expression on his face as he closely watched beyonce's performance of the national anthem. her performance also seemed to catch the eye of senator chuck schumer. he was also behind the dazzling diva stealing a bit of the spotlight with that face. president clinton didn't want to miss the chance of seeing kelly clarkson up close and personal. he was caught sneaking a peek out of line. obama's brother-in-law, craig robinson, was hamming it up over the president's shoulder. eric cantor was caught making some sour faces during richard blanco's reading of the inaugural poem. doesn't look like he's a fan. and from a frequent critic of president obama, conservative

tact activist grover norquist feeted, "it is official. the best after-party tonight was chicago mayor rahm's." for a look at the national forecast, we turn to dylan dreyer. >> good morning. it ended up being nice. >> dry and pretty warm. >> and temperatures were above average yesterday, but today the 20s will start working into the nation's capital. also 20s to take told across the northeast and even single dimgis through the northern plains. that cold air crossing over the great lakes which are still unfrozen is creating a lot of lake-effect snow. that's where we'll see most of the additional snow moving throughout the rest of this week. perhaps another 6 to 12 inches of snow possible. we also have some snow still continuing to fall across cape cod. not a lot. this storm system brought the bulk of the precipitation right to the southeast of nantucket. but we are still looking at some ocean enhancement to produce perhaps another coating to an

inch of snow across cape cod. here's where we are going to see this cold air just continue to stream over the unfrozen great lakes. especially western michigan and also western new york and northwestern pennsylvania. that's where we're going to see most of the additional snow. perhaps an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow in that area. and we could also see 6 to 12 in northwestern michigan and also northeastern michigan as well. right on the thumb there. we are looking at this cold air to hold strong for several more days. nine below right now in minneapolis. work in wind on top of that, it feels like 22 below in minneapolis. feels like ten below in chicago right now. and high temperatures today don't look all that impressive. the cold air just sits across the northern plains moving into the western great lakes. and then this will continue to surge eastward as we head into tomorrow. temperatures today in boston, only 28 degrees. 25 in new york city. but ironically in southern california yesterday, we tied and even broke record high temperatures with highs yesterday in the lower 80s.

welcome back to "first look." elections are being held in israel right now to determine if prime minister benjamin netanyahu will win a third term in office. nbc's jim maceda is live in tel aviv. good morning. assuming priedictioning are correct and he wins, what effect could that have on israel's policies? >> reporter: hi to you, mara. well, about 15%, keep in mind, of israelis are saying that they're still undecided going into today's voting booth, so this is not a done deal. but all indications are that netanyahu's right-wing party with a second partner party will

win a third term but with fewer seats, maybe eight to ten fewer seats in parliament. the biggest question is who does he choose in a coalition to govern with? the smart money is on him lining up with even more hard-line parties to his right which, of course, is the nightmare scenario for palestinians. or he could surprise everyone and team up with a more centrist bloc, and that would probably give him more wiggle room, at least that's what the analysts are saying, to deal with the stalled peace talks and what israelis are calling a tanking economy. and the horse trading begins as early as tomorrow morning. mara? >> and let's turn, if we can, to elsewhere in the region to syria where russia is sending planes to lebanon to evacuate citizens from the region. now, what kind of sign does that send to assad's government in syria? >> reporter: well, that's a very good question. first of all, the russian government's making this look like an evacuation, a short-term evacuation, only for those who want to leave the region. but russian officials are

underscoring that, you know, there are tens of thousands of russians living and working in syria. it's their former client state. russia has a warm-water naval base in syria. evacuating 100 russian citizens isn't that much. however, this would appear to be the first sign that moscow is finally seeing the writing on the wall without publicly admitting it, of course, that president assad's days in power are now truly numbered. mara? >> jim maceda live in tel aviv, thanks so much for that. now back to the capitol where the senate has the opportunity to kill a filibuster. instead they can change the rules in favor of a simple 51-vote majority while bringing back the talking filibuster. next to los angeles where former cardinal roger ma noenny said i'm sorry. according to confidential church records, the retired catholic leader and other chergymen shielded pedophile priests from criminal prosecution for more than a decade before the scandal

became public. authorities say one person has died after a snowy highway pileup involving as many as 85 vehicles in southwest ohio. the crash on interstate 275 was one of three separate pileups that snared dozens of vehicles on monday. moments after a martin luther king day parade in new orleans, shots rang out from a car and five people were hit by gunfire. police say none of the injuries are life threatening but they're still looking for a motive and suspect involved. a dramatic rescue all caught on tape in spain. a 52-year-old woman faints and falls to the tracks of a rail station. an off-duty police officer springs into action, jumping onto the tracks to quickly pick that woman up and pull her back to the platform while others wave in the direction of an oncoming strain to stop. thank goodness for that rescue. traders are back to wall street after yesterday's holiday, and the question, will the rally continue? earnings on deck today, dupont, johnson & johnson, verizon, ibm and google. investors will also keep a close

eye on the dollar after the bank of japan adopted a 2% inflation target to combat deflation. research in motion is rising after its ceo said the blackberry maker is considering selling off its hardware production unit. groupon is suspending gun-related deals while it reviews its current policies. mcdonald's is shelling out $700,000 to the detroit area muslim community after two locations allegedly sold non-menu items when it ran out of food according to islamic dietary law. atari, the classic video gaming system, are going bankrupt in an effort to break free from their debt-ridden french parent. and tech blogger noah zerken was impressed by his recent subway sighting sporting his glasses on the downtown 3 train. that's my train. things can get nasty.

"proud of my husband and the pats. by the way, if anyone is bored, please go to ray lewis' wikipedia page. six kids, four wives, acquitted for murder. paid a family off. yay. what a hall of fame player! a true role model! now here's nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer. >> we were talking about the cold bitter air across the plains. in fact, so cold, we have video of this reporter. look at that. that is a frozen t-shirt. he wet it at the beginning of his broadcast. by the end of it, it was frozen solid. that's cold. that's real cold. i'm sure you've seen the cup. you throw up the cup of water and it vaporizes. it's another version of the same thing. it is brutal out that way. nine below right now in minneapolis. it is only going to warm up to about one degree this afternoon. so not too much better than where it was yesterday. factor in the windchill, and it will not feel like it's above zero all day long. in the northeast, we're looking at temperatures to top out in the mid to upper 20s. a flurry or two still possible in new york city.

but it's more or less the lake-effect snow. another 6 to 12 inches of lake-effect snow is possible across erie, pennsylvania, buffalo, new york and also the western part of michigan as well. tomorrow, minneapolis gets up to ten-22 in chicago. we'll stay in the 20s in the northeast. this is the first time this season even compared to last year that it's actually been this cold. >> starting to feel like january, unfortunately. >> unfortunately. just ahead, some of the biggest talent, best performances and best dressed at president obama's inauguration. you're watching "first look" on msnbc. s. let's get a recap, merv. with matching boots from j. crew. as for the ball, she stunned in a ruby red gown by jason wu. a pair of jimmy choo shoes helped her glide across the dance floor with the commander in chief. malia and sasha made sure to turn heads as well in their bright and hopefully warm coats. malia's by j. crew and sasha's by kate spade. and jill biden stepped out in a silky silver coat and later accompanied v.p. biden wearing a blue silk dress by vera wang. unfortunately there was nothing like aretha franklin's now-infamous hat, but katy perry sweeted a photo of a tiny aretha hat. i thought the first lady's outfit was stunning, pitch pitch and her inauguration gown. >> i thought everybody looked great. j. crew has so many colorful jackets which are sometimes hard to find. i think the girls looked so adorable.
